Pet Diabetes Awareness Month

November 16, 2020

Diabetes is a common condition for people, and it is also a health issue that pet owners should be aware of in cats and dogs. November is Pet Diabetes Awareness Month — an important time to learn the signs and schedule preventive screenings.

What Is Diabetes In Pets?

Diabetes mellitus is a condition that occurs when the body cannot use glucose normally. Unlike humans, pets often require lifelong insulin therapy to manage the condition effectively. Early detection is key to managing diabetes and maintaining your pet's quality of life.

Know The Symptoms

Be aware of these signs that may indicate diabetes in your pet:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive urination
  • Excessive hunger paired with weight loss
  • Lethargy or decreased energy
  • Cloudy eyes (particularly in dogs)
  • Poor grooming behavior (particularly in cats)
  • Thinning, dry, or dull hair coat

Diagnosis And Early Detection

Blood testing is recommended for any pet showing these signs. Annual wellness screenings — including blood chemistry panels, complete blood counts, heartworm tests, parasite screens, and urinalysis — can detect diabetes and other conditions early, enabling timely and effective treatment.

Schedule Your Pet's Screening

Early detection enables timely treatment and a much better prognosis. If your pet is showing any of these signs, or if it has been more than a year since their last wellness exam, please call our office at (210) 495-8245 or email us to schedule an appointment today.
